Gather around the fire everybody for some unsolicited opinions and notes on things that you didn’t actually ask for…
About the Blog
This is a blog about ideas. I intend to spend a fair amount of time writing about sailing and beer, but but ideas are really my jam so don’t be surprised if we go off topic. This blog is my little corner of the internet where I like to throw ideas on the table, hammer on them, shape them and keep them for later so that they multiply.
Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple, learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen.John Steinbeck
If you start a blog about ideas, there are a couple of things that need to be stated up front for everybody’s safety:
- The ideas expressed here are my own and may or may not reflect the opinions of my past, present or future employers, family, friends, drinking associates, etc.
- I value clarity, logic and consistency. Ideas might change as new information comes to light…
- I love business and investing. I might write about that. Keep in mind that only crazy people take financial advice from people they don’t know on the internet. My ramblings should not be construed as investment advice.
- I’m not a doctor. Don’t take anything you read here as medical advice even if I say it’s healthy.
So that’s what’s going on with the blog. If you are still reading here is a little about me…
About the Author
My name is Mike Barlow and I’m the main author of the blog.
Over the years I have found that I learn best by doing something (usually badly) and then trying to explain it to myself, to my kids or to somebody else. Through that process I identify the gaps in my own understanding, which helps me ask better questions. I think that’s where the idea of this blog began… trying to leverage the the “learning by explaining” loop.
About Our Boat
As I mentioned before, I plan to spend a fair amount of time writing about sailing and beer. A little bit about our boat…
In the fall of 2018 we purchased a 1969 Santana 37 that had been refitted by a retired engineer in Paulsbo, WA. Destiny II is a 37 foot sloop rigged sail boat with an ocean racing history.
The WD Schock company built 21 Santana 37s in the late sixties/early seventies. Destiny II is the second in the series. She has a fiberglass hull, 37 hp Yanmar diesel engine, thirty foot waterline and six foot draft.
The refit that she had covers all of the bases for sailing in the northern San Juan Islands, Puget Sound and Strait of Georgia. We have some small projects planned like upgrading the batteries, adding solar power etc. that I plan to cover in the blog.
